Homeless People - How do you Respond?

Many of us has seen a homeless person at some point in our lives.  What I have found in talking to friends is there is a difference in how people respond.  Some engage and will give them a smile, a conversation or support (money, food, etc.).  Others are uncomfortable and just look away.

Here in Colorado Springs the number of homeless has significantly increased over the past two years.  For multiple cities, towns and communities in our country we have people and families who are now homeless that have never been before.  The re-occurring question is what to do?  Here is a link to a great article about Arkansas Students and their 3 Bags in 2 Days program for helping homeless people in a productive way.  Perhaps it can be something for all of us?

Hi Kelly,

Due to our warm climate, we have a large number of homeless people who gravitate to Arizona.

There are many ways we can contribute to assist them. One of my very favorite ways is the parking meter method.

We have red meters throughout one of our downtown areas. If you put fifty cents in: you just bought a homeless person a bag lunch. If you put one dollar in: you just bought a night in a shelter with a shower and dinner. etc.

It is a great way to give.

We also have what looks like a credit card that you can purchase in packets of ten. If you see a homeless person, you can give them a card. It entitles them to a bus ride to a local shelter, overnight stay, meal, shower and even a change of clothes depending on what level cards you purchase.

Best regards,
