There are a lot of holidays that celebrate many important and meaningful events, moments & traditions in our lives. My Dad was a career Army officer and genuinely loved every minute of it. I'm sure there were times when going off to war was not his first choice, nor the sacrifices made in that time but he so believed in protecting our country and its people. Out of all the holidays that I called him for, even his birthday, calling him on Veterans Day to say, "Thanks Dad" was always meaningful to him and something special that we shared.
With this in mind I thought the following excerpt is a great example of what being a "solider" means that may often be overlooked:
"It is the SOLDIER, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.It is the SOLDIER, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.It is the SOLDIER, not the campus organizers, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.It is the SOLDIER, who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag,Who allows the protester to burn the flag."
