Colorado Fire Protection Plan for Your Property

As Spring comes in and the beauty its brings with flowers (often times poking their heads through the snow) we also are reminded about being responsible Colorado residents for wild fires.  As we have learned the past few years here and in other states they are a fact of life.  Having a plan and responding to that plan is helpful and can be the difference maker as to whether your house is saved or not from a wildfire.

Here is a checklist of Fire Safety "things to do" on an annual basis and a link to more information if desired.

  • If you live in a rural area, make sure to drop off a map showing your house, driveway and directions to the local fire department.  If you have an ILC (Improvement Location Certificate) this can and often is used by fire fighters in protecting your home.
  • When the time changes have that be your "signal" to check and replace batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide systems.
  • Annually walk your property and thin trees and shrubs around your house and/or outbuildings.
  • Have a written evacuation plan and "suitcase" if you will of what absolutely needs to go with you if possible.  If you have more time, have a more detailed plan of what personal property you want to take and where to take it.
  • If you have outdoor animals, have a plan on where you can take them that is not in your neighborhood.
  • Have a water supply ready to go (hose nearby, etc).  If you happen to have a well find out if the well has the ability for the firehouse to attach directly to it.  If so, definitely stop by the fire department with specifics and where it is located.
There are a lot of moving parts to fire prevention, protecting your property and what to do if a fire happens.  The Colorado State University Extension Office offers in-depth information on the subject.
