Where to Cut Your Own Christmas Tree

Now that Thanksgiving is over and we are finally getting into the season to be jolly, now is the time to be putting up the Christmas decor, and that includes a Christmas tree. For many people, a fake tree is their favorite way to go - it is just a storage bin away, it doesn't make a pine needle mess on your floor, and it is one of the few cost free items for the holiday season since you already own it. However, the fresh pine scent that a real tree creates in your home cannot be beat. It also makes a great family activity to cut down your own tree. So, for those of you wanting to try out a real Christmas tree this year, here is a quick guide to your options.

When buying a real tree, it can either be picked out and cut down yourself or purchased pre-cut at a store or nursery. If you would like to cut your own tree, then you have two options: 1) go to a "choose and cut Christmas tree farm", or 2) obtain a special permit in order to cut your own tree down in a National Forest. Unfortunately, the only "choose and cut your own Christmas tree" farm in Colorado Springs, Merry Christmas Tree Farm will be closed this year.

If you would rather buy your tree  precut, then simply visit your nearby King Soopers, Lowes, or Home Depot. Or to support local business, go to a Colorado Springs nursery such as Rick's Garden Center, or Heidrich's Colorado Tree Farm Nursery

The USDA offers permits in National Park land every year to go and cut your own tree. The closest National Park to the Springs is Pike and San Isabel National Forests. The permits are only $10 per tree and a limit of 5 permits per person. Permits are available for purchase at Woodland Park Middle School on December 5th and 6th, and December 12th and 13th from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm. More information can be found here.

The Rocky Mountains allow Colorado to be Christmas tree wonderland. So take advantage of the beautiful state we live in and get yourself a fresh tree this year!
