Xeriscape Doesn't Have To Be Zeroscape

Xeriscaping  refers to a method of landscape design that minimizes water use. Some people took that to mean rocks and cactus. For some houses this actually works. For others it doesn’t, and for many people, we still like to see flowers and greenery. What’s interesting is there are hundreds of options to keep greenery in your landscape, but also reduce your outdoor watering bill and save on water useage.

In Colorado we have a wonderful extension service:http://www.colostate.edu/Dept/CoopExt/4dmg/Xeris/xeris1.htm which talks in depth about xeriscaping for COLORADO! No more guessing if these plants will even grow here, they are pre-selected by the Extension Office for this region. Xeriscaping doesn’t have to be expensive. It does take planning, but any good yard and landscaping project deserves this time and thought. For inspiration, Colorado Springs Utilities has a Xeriscape Demonstration Garden, 2855 Mesa Road. The gardens are arranged by water requirements, thereby giving you a solid idea of what can grow and thrive in Colorado along with the water requirements. The gardens are open year-round, and are FREE to visit.
