It’s been cold and rainy lately here, with some folks seeing snow yet in mid-May. Some friends of mine decided it was time for me and my family to experience something truly unique, Casa Bonita.
If you’ve never been to Casa Bonita, I can say it is something everyone should experience. It is unlike any dining experience you’ve ever had or will ever have again, it is that unique.

When my friend told me the plans, and I went along not knowing what I was in for, I was utterly shocked she would have me driving down Colfax Ave west of downtown Denver. Casa Bonita is located off of Colfax Ave in the middle of a strip mall, but has it’s own unique facade towering over the rest of the mall, in a true south-of-the-border pink, and an equally out of place large white fountain in front. When my family and I stepped out of the car on the very cold and wet Saturday night, I thought, “This place is in an odd location. It belongs in Mexico.” It is a Mexican restaurant, and in the words of Stan from South Park, “Casa Bonita is like the Walt Disney World of Mexican restaurants.” I’m not one for agreeing with swearing cartoons, but Stan was right.
Upon entering the restaurant you are greeted with another world built inside and you quickly forget what lies beyond the outside doors. You are taken to a Mexican village, and a long line in which you wait in to place your order. Your food comes out of a quaint “hole in the wall”, and giving food and holes in walls a whole new meaning. Then you are escorted to a table in a jungle setting as indoor cliff divers jump from a created waterfall. Fire juggling, skits and plays, rope swinging and diving are the live entertainment offered at Casa Bonita while you dine. Wait staff bring you frozen concotions, chips and salsa and soapapillas. An arcade and game room is on one side of the restaurant, and a quieter dining space in the “old mines” is a neat touch to those pirate-esk theme parties. Black Beard’s cave was closed when we were there, but I’m told it is pretty cool. Photo ops abound here, and there is an old-tyme photo booth near the arcade for those once-in-a-lifetime photos.
