Colorado Vacation Ownership Options

Summer is nearly here and you really want to get out of town this year, and every additional year, but don’t know how to go about it with today’s gas prices. It’s ok, you are not the only one. Here are a few ideas to get your piece of vacation heaven, year after year.

Colorado Vacation Ownership Options

1. Buy a condo. Condos can be a good vacation hideaway in the mountain towns of Colorado. Why? Condos are often situated near the base of the mountains. Condos can rent well when not in use, providing you some added income if priced right during the high AND low seasons. What’s more, condos ususally have an HOA or other maintenance program, so you will never have to worry about shoveling snow, mowing lawns or triming trees. Many complexes also come with the use of hot tubs (some indoor, some outdoor), pools, and exercise rooms. There are a lot of great deals to be had in the land of condos (some in the low $100s!), and you still have the ability to make it as your own with paint, lighting, fixtures, appliances, pictures, and window treatments.

2. Buy a townhouse. For the same reason as the condo, townhouses are often close to the bases of ski hills making them convenient for skiing or hiking. Many townhouses will come with a little more room with a postage stamp-sized backyard. Depending on the set-up there may be some outside maintenance, but it would be good to find out what is your responsibility and what is the HOA’s responsibility before purchasing. There are many terrific deals on townhouses as well, and many of these communities also offer a clubhouse of sorts with pools, saunas, hot tubs, exercise rooms and game rooms or spaces to rent out for large groups.

3. Buy a timeshare. If you want grandeur but can only afford a slice of it, consider buying into a timeshare. You buy one week or one month increments (depending on the setup) and use it for that one week or month every year. You split the costs amongst everyone else who is involved. This is a good idea if you love the location and really do want to return to same place on the same week/month every year. If this sounds like it may get old for you, then reconsider.

4. Ask friends and family if they would be interested in buying a property together, with even shares of ownership. This can be a great way to get a place for family and friends. Make sure to draw up contracts about the amount of time each family or share holder will get, and work out the popular holidays or rotations so everyone will get a chance to use it for the Fourth of July, or Christmas. There will be more maintenance involved too, should this property not be a condo or townhouse. Agree upon maintenance responsibilities, or find a property management company to help you with regular maintenance and up keep. No one wants to spend their vacation time cleaning up after the last group, or stuck with maintenance issues because no one else has taken care of it.
