The Real Story Behind the New Years Fireworks on Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak New Year

Many cities around the globe have fireworks to celebrate and acknowledge a New Year.  There are not many, however, that can claim hiking up an over 14,000 foot mountain in often times treatorous winter weather to light fireworks for the New Year.

Everyone that enjoys the fireworks that go off on top of Pikes Peak at midnight on New Years every year may not actually know the history and long standing tradition behind the firecrackers. They are not just simply lit up at the top of the mountain, but carried up the mountain by a select group of mountaineers part of a club called the AdAmAn Club. A club that started the tradition more than ninety years ago in 1922.

The event was first organized by a group of men, now called the "frozen five." In 1922, they ventured to climb Pikes Peak in the cold winter weather on New Years Eve to celebrate 1923 more uniquely; aside from the usual festivities. On their way up the mountain in what would today be considered very impractical attire and gear, they collected flares left along the Cog Railway by workers. Once at the summit, they celebrated their ascent with drinks and food waiting until midnight when they eventually set off the flares; ringing in the new year of 1923. Hence, they organized the "AdAmAn Club." Named after the idea that every year only one man would be added to the group.

Today, the tradition is still alive and well with more than 95 members. The fireworks show on the summit of Pikes Peak can be seen from miles around the city. The year of 2016 is no exception to the previous years. We will all be turning our heads to the peak to delight in the beautiful firecracker show put on by these passionate and gutsy mountaineers. It is truly a Colorado Springs tradition.

So this year when you see the firework show, think about your fellow locals that put it all together for you to enjoy. And hope for clear skies!
